Innovation by consumers represents a significant but almost unknown element of innovation activities that exist across the society. While goos and services related innovation by consumers has existed in various forms for very long time, new technologies such as internet have given a significant boost to consumer innovaiton and increased its diffusion potential. This research breaks new ground in the area and its objectives were to:

  1. Measure the intensity and diffusion on consumer innovation in Finland
  2. Develop indicators that enable monitoring of consumer innovation
  3. Inform policy makers and business on the implications of consumer innovation

The research project was led by Professor Eric von Hippel, MIT Sloan School of Management under contract from the Ministry of Employment and Economy of Finland and Tekes. Full research report available from the link:
